Hi all,

I’m performing a 2D water entry analysis of a wedge using the SALE method. Following the examples ( http://ftp.lstc.com/anonymous/outgoing/hao/sale/models/misc/ , sale2d), I built the model, but the simulation aborted with some errors.

1. The first error is related to the keyword *INITIAL_HYDROSTATIC_ALE. I know we need to use a solid set for the ALESID entry in the card in a 3D ALE analysis, but what if there are no solid elements in the 2D plain strain problem? I noticed in the example, CPIDZ in the *ALE_STRUCTURED_MESH card was left empty, and I guess it is the way to create the 2D ALE mesh. I also noticed that the *SMMALE_MESH_SET_SHELL keyword was used in the file mesh_sale.k. I don’t know if it is related to the creation of the “solid set” because I didn’t find this keyword neither in the manual nor in the internet.

2. The second error is very confusing. I specified the ALE2D section to the material parts Air and Water with ALEFORM = 11 and ELFORM = 13 (plain strain), as did in the examples, but a 10380 error arose in the message file which says:

*ALE_MULTI-MATERIAL_GROUP

Element formulation/Element type mis-matched

Part ID 11, Secion ID 11

ELFORM 13, Element type shell.

I checked my model very carefully and really can’t understand why this error would occur.

The keyword files of my model and the afore-mentioned examples have been attached.

Thanks for the reply. The keyword file of my model has been attached. The example file can be downloaded in the ftp of LSTC (please see the link above).

It seems that the file type (.k) is not allowed. I changed the extension from .k to .txt.

Sorry about that. There is a default file scanner that flags k files. I just tried another fix to allow them through. I will be sure to get this fixed today.
