After debugging some tied contact issues this morning, I came across this really helpful slide show by LSTC:

This goes through many many options of contacts and when you should use the different types. It's pretty easy to understand and should be helpful for anyone having contact issues. Generally, it's best to stick with the automatic contacts. A little more info can be found on this webpage as well:
